Welcome to withpoles.com a website/blog dedicated to Nordic Walking. There’s some information about me on the ‘About Me’ page so just a bit here about Nordic Walking.

The roots of Nordic walking can be traced back to cross country skiers (thought to be some of the fittest athletes in the world) who when the snow melted walked with their ski poles so they could continue to exercise their upper bodies and core muscles.

Today Nordic Walking is one of fastest growing activities in the world with an estimated 10 million people enjoying it including around 20% of the population of Finland where it was developed.

It uses specially designed poles to enhance normal walking. The result is a whole body workout that uses 90% of the skeletal muscles and can burn up to 46% more calories than normal walking. In addition adding poles and good Nordic Walking technique can:

  • Release tension in the neck and shoulders
  • Improve posture and gait
  • Strengthen your back and abdominal muscles
  • Reduce the impact on the joints

As an added bonus many people report that it feels easier than just walking meaning they can do it for longer.

Nordic Walking is a great activity for those not used to exercise as it is based on normal walking, doesn’t requires specialist clothing and instructors will generally be able to lend poles. It is also great for anyone of any fitness level looking to get a really good all body workout in a limited time.

There’s loads more information about the history and benefits of Nordic Walking on both the British Nordic Walking and International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA) websites.
